Periasamy Muthukumar

Assistant Manager (Workplace Safety & Health)

Muthukumar’s philosophy is “Safety is for Tomorrow”. To him, safety is a formula: When employees follow the same set of protocols every day, they can expect the same important results: getting to go home safe and sound today, tomorrow and every day.

Muthukumar is a safety and health officer, which means he has to be a jack of all trades. He needs to familiarise himself with all aspects relating to site work, from structural to architectural as well as mechanical and electrical. He works with subcontractors to get them to align and prioritise safety with that of Straits Construction. He plans, implements and evaluates safety programmes as well.

Muthukumar’s team takes the lead in conceptualising and rolling out new measures. One of Straits Construction’s brainchildren is the mesh barricade system, which encloses the perimeter of the worksite and prevents height-related hazards. With this simple yet innovative system, the company has joined the ranks of other winners at the Singapore Contractors Association Ltd Safety Innovation Teams Convention.

Straits Construction’s priority on safety is why Muthukumar has endeared himself to the company. Here, suggestions to improve safety flow freely between management and employees. A rewarding moment came when Muthukumar helped the company to achieve numerous safety awards for their projects as well as attain one million man-hours without any lost time injury (LTI) at one of the project sites. This success is later superseded by another: two million man-hours were clocked without LTI.

To Muthukumar, a stellar safety record is of paramount importance. “We are trusted by others,” he declares with pride. In turn, this cements Straits Construction’s status as an industry leader.
